If you like the new design, do you think it would be better if the sidebar background was a shade of gray rather than the same black as the main posts background?

yes, I think it should be gray....at least give it a try for a few weeks.
I agree with fabrique. Try the gray for a while. All the black seems to take away from the creativity. But I do like it better than the previous background.

Well, the black background in general gives the images a pop.
As someone who is familiar with blogspot and its sidebars, I am a little indifferent about making it grey (as opposed to black), since I tend to look at both panels.
If a new visitor visits, and you want to draw his/her attention to the sidebar, then, perhaps a different colour might do the trick.
Just my modest opinion.
My blog's all-white, and I think no one is drawn to the sidebar, unless you tell them to.

LOL - You will make even more changes before you are satisfied. I think I went through about 20 revisions!
I Personally I do not like the black - I do not think it is inviting and it makes the other elements harder on the eyes. (Just my 2 cents!)

I definitely like the new layout - it lets the posts themselves stand out more, and, yes, I like the sidebar in gray :)
